First off I wanted to apologize for the lack of blog posts recently! I left for Mexico last Thursday and forgot my memory card reader, so I couldn't get ANY of the images off my camera the whole time! I got back late last night so now I can finally share the content with you guys :)
Anyway, I've been getting a lot of comments from you guys about heading to Mexico soon! I fell in love with Mexico when my family visited my senior year of college, and I've been back six or seven times since then. Today I wanted to share some of my travel tips with you guys!
1. Always bring a pen
My first tip is to ALWAYS pack a pen with you in your purse or carry-on. In fact, pack two pens! You can never have enough. During your flight to Mexico, the flight attendants will pass out customs forms that you will need to fill out before entering the country, however they don't loan you a pen to fill them out with. You have two options: either pack or pen, or ask everyone around you on the airplane if they have a pen and if you can borrow theirs (which I had to do one time and it was really stressful!). The reason you want to fill it out on the plane and not when you land is so that you can go straight to customs and get in line when you arrive.
2. Invest in a wallet that holds your passport, too
You definitely want to keep your passport in a place that is safe and easily accessible, since you will have to use it a lot on your trip (several times at check-in, at the security gate and even right before you board the airplane). I always bring a wallet that is large enough to hold both my passport, boarding pass and my credit cards so that it's all in the same place and easy to keep track of. I have this Louis Vuitton wallet that is large enough to fit my passport, but this one is a great deal and comes in lots of colors.
3. Wear lots of layers!!!
Typically when flying to Mexico, you're leaving a climate that is much colder than the one you're arriving in. For instance, when we left for the airport on Thursday morning it was 40 degrees and raining, but when we arrived in Mexico it was 80 degrees and sunny! I like to wear clothes with lots of layers so that I can easily adjust what I'm wearing if it's hot or cold. I usually wear both a scarf and jacket to the airport with a light T-shirt or dress underneath, so that I can take both of them off once I arrive. (Side note: it is usually pretty chilly on the plane so having a scarf to use as a blanket is really nice!)
4. Pack a swimsuit, sandals and change of clothes in your carry-on
If you arrive to your hotel early in the afternoon, there's a good chance that your room won't be ready yet. That's why I like to pack a swimsuit, sandals and a change of clothes in my carry-on bag - if the room isn't ready yet, you can go ahead and change into your swimsuit and sandals and head straight to the pool! (Don't forget to pack a small tube of sunscreen in your carry-on too!)
5. Wear comfortable shoes
I saved this one for last because it's really important!! On your travel day to Mexico, you will end up doing a TON of walking and standing. In addition to walking long distances in the airport, you'll probably end up waiting in a long line at the Mexico airport. We flew into Cancun on Thursday and ended up waiting in line at customs for longer than an hour! Definitely wear comfortable shoes that are broken in and that you can walk long distances in, or you'll regret it!
Let me know if you have any questions! :)
xoxo
