How to Layer in the Fall

One of my favorite parts about dressing for fall is layering. Cooler weather allows you to really get creative with your outfits, mix patterns and put together cute combinations. But layering can get a little tricky, especially when it comes to the top half! I've put together some of my favorite combinations below for a little "cheat sheet" to layering.

Let's start with the most basic layering piece for fall: a turtleneck. I picked up a few of these striped jersey turtlenecks this year because I love and wear them so much. So how can you style them? Try wearing them under a big, chunky sweater or paired with a puffer vest (I picked up the gingham puffer vest a few days ago & I'm obsessed!). I also really like turtlenecks under button-up shirts (for instance, a chambray one). And perhaps my favorite look of all is under a knit poncho like this one! The bottom half of the outfit is pretty easy… you can wear jeans, cords, black denim or even leggings with boot socks, which is my favorite.

Next we have a simple chambray shirt (I own this one). I love chambray shirts because the possibilities are endless! My favorite look is to wear a colorful sweater over top, and to have the edges of the chambray shirt peeking out of the sleeves and the bottom of the sweater. This look is really cute with a statement necklace. You can also wear chambray with a fur vest or with a cute cardigan. Adding a belt (like this leopard one) over your layers adds another dimension to the outfit and also makes your waist look small. When I wear a chambray top, I usually stray way from wearing jeans to avoid wearing denim on denim. I own this pair of distressed black pants and they are perfect for wearing with chambray (plus really comfy!!).

The same looks I showed with the chambray top can also be applied to any type of button down shirts. I love pairing sweaters, fur vests, puffer vests and cardigans with any button down (especially plaids!). The possibilities are endless!
